Hello everyone! I’m Janet Wallace and am now serving as President of the Blue Ridge Board. Thank you to all of you that voted in the recent elections and /or attended the Annual Shareholders Meeting.
With those elections, there have been some comings and goings and shuffling amongst the board positions. But before I describe them, I want to give a HUGE thanks to Steve Malloch, my predecessor. He has done a fantastic job as president the last three years. His leadership has brought a real focus to activities and an openness to communication that has been invaluable. His shoes will be tough to fill and not only because I just wear a size 6 ½.
Fortunately for us all, Steve is not going far. He is now Vice President and Architecture Chair and we need to thank him again for taking on the challenges of those roles. I know he has plans to address issues with and make improvements to the architecture review process and communications. Rounding out the officer positions we now welcome two new board members that were voted in by you shareholders: Brandon Pemberton, Treasurer and Qinghua (Quinne) Feng, Secretary. Brandon brings a strong financial background and it’s great to see Quinne as a relatively new neighbor jump right in to volunteer on the board.
Jenny Fredericks was re-elected to another 3 year term and will continue her excellent work improving the swim and tennis operations. Look for some new and exciting developments with the way the tennis program runs this summer. Also voted in to serve out the remain-der of vacated terms, are Barbara Sinn, Membership Chair, and Kelly Sheridan, Legal Chair. The rest of the board will continue in their current positions.
The budget passed as well. After serving as treasurer this past year, I have an apprecia-tion for how “lean” we run and how conservatively we have approached the last several years. The focus has been on building reserves and working to pay back the clubhouse remodel loan. To do that, a number of maintenance activities were postponed. While we are now in a strong cash position, the budget needs to support implementing some of those projects. The first big project was completed this past month: resurfacing the pool bottom and improving some of the electrical systems. On tap for this coming year are to upgrade the FOB key system for security as we “reclaim” the beach park (more on that below), paint the clubhouse, and continue electrical and pool motor work.
So, with that budget preamble, here’s my friendly reminder: please pay your dues by Feb-ruary 28.
The last thing I want to mention this month is that the CSO project team will be coming to our next board meeting on Monday, March 9. We will get an update on the status of the work and will begin to discuss how to approach the completion of the project. The fence will be redone at the beach park and new landscaping will be required. We also hope to influence how the intersection and pathways will be reinstated. Please come to the meet-ing or pass along any ideas/comments you may have.
I look forward to getting my feet wet in this new role. The board will be engaged in some planning next month and we welcome thoughts on what we should be addressing in the next 12-18 months. Please shoot me an email or if you see me walking our dog, Henley, flag me down!
