President’s Report – July 2016

As I look towards this coming July 4th when the girls will undoubtedly win another consecutive Tug-of-War battle and try to come up with an overall theme to write about for the month of July, I can’t think of one. Instead I’ll go with a several fairly random topics.

Board But Not Boring

We are in the need of a board member to finish out Brandon Pemberton’s term through 2017. He has ably served as Treasurer (Thank you, Brandon) but has moved out of the neighborhood and has resigned. Brooke Walker has agreed to step in to the role of treasurer until we either find someone to take on that job or her current responsibility as Security Chair.

As you enjoy all Blue Ridge has to offer this summer, and think about how you’d like to preserve certain aspects and/or have an impact on any changes, please consider board service. With the potential capital improvements to the Clubhouse and Pool on the horizon, we need people with a good eye towards budgets and financial stewardship. If measured by the number of posts on the community Facebook page, I know, too, that there are folks out there with an interest in the safety of our neighborhood.

With less than a 1 ½ years left on this board position term, it’s a good way to test out whether serving on the Blue Ridge Board is something for you. There is a lot going on but it is not a huge time commitment. Please email me if you have questions or want to chat about this. There will be two additional positions open this coming January as well. Thanks for considering! president@blueridgeseattle.com.

As a side note our next board meeting is July 11 with architecture projects up for review (see below) and the usual reports from each functional area: Treasurer, Legal, Security, Membership and Pool & Tennis. Each month we also provide an update on the Clubhouse/Pool Improvement Project. There is no board meeting scheduled for August.

Sign Sign Everywhere a Sign

Recently, we’ve had a number of questions about our covenant restrictions on signs. According to Mutual Easement 13, Blue Ridge does prohibit signs except for real estate “For Sale” signs.

However, the State RCW’s explicitly override HOA’s ability to prohibit political signs before primary and general elections. We may lay out reasonable limits for those signs, but cannot prohibit them. So no “commercial” oriented signs but campaign signs are permitted during election periods.

Hot Fun Summer in Blue Ridge

As always, there is a lot going on during the summer and here are a few highlights. Weather is looking good for a strong turnout for the annual 4th of July parade and picnic. Always one of

my favorites. Thank you Holli Harris and Breanne Yuchausz for organizing the festivities again this year. The Woodbine Play Structure will be installed July 11-27. There will be an opportunity to help with the set-up on July 23 and the committee is still looking for funds to help with the costs. Check the web site for details. The annual summer Fiesta (adults only) is July 30 6:00-11:00pm poolside. RSVP at blueridgeevents@gmail.com .Tickets can be purchased for $40/person. Margaritas WILL be available!

Once swim team is over, I know many of us go off on summer vacations. We’ll be doing our first big driving trip up to Banff/Lake Louise Canada this year. Wish us luck. I hope you all have a great summer!

Janet
